About the song: I went camping by my lonesome on Bear Island, NC near the end of September in 2008 to get clarity about my spirituality, sexuality, and general purpose in life. I ended up being the only person on the island that night, which was pretty awesome/lonesome/ever-so-slightly-freaky. The island faces south, so I hiked to one end of it for the sunset, and to the other end of it in the morning for the sunrise. When you are the only person on an island, the ocean becomes clothes-optional, and that morning all alone on the island, naked in the ocean watching the sunrise was a very clarifying and affirming moment for me. This is a song that came out of that.
Everything You Told Me is Coming True Real Slow
In the dark there’s a hole
And I know, cause you said so
Everything you told me is coming true real slow
I found that the notes that I wrote long ago
All say the same thing a the one that you hold
A bridge over water
Troubled, I look over
Tempted, but I falter
Hold me back, lover.
One step and I’m under
One step and I’m done for
Is this what I’ve come for?
I don’t know anymore
We will splinter without your shelter
Boulders we carry drown in the water
And won’t pull us under, so come out farther
Find that we’re fine and float out with the tide
In the dark there’s a hold
And I felt it from the get-go
The gasp of my breath cold from the undertoe
I want to stay, but I don’t
I want to rest, but I won’t
For the story untold is how I make it home
We will splinter without your shelter
Boulders we carry drown in the water
And won’t pull us under, so come out farther
Find that we’re fine and float out with the tide
And the ships come for me two by two
And the waves are crashing against the side
I fear we might not make it through
I fear we might not make it out alive
But what did you say to me?
About shift of the tide
What’d you say to me?
That we might survive.
What did you say to me?
What did you say to me?
That we would splinter without your shelter
Boulders we carry drown in the water
And won’t pull us under, so come out farther
Find that we’re fine and float out with the tide
